In my goal to illustrate my own books, I’ve purchased a Wacom Inutuos Small Creative Pen and Touch Tablet. Tonight we were playing around, learning the basics of creating an image and seeing what we could do with no experience using a pen with a computer.
First, let me say that holding a computer pen takes a little getting used to. I’ve sketched for several years and am fairly familiar with a pencil and ink pen, but…the computer pen doesn’t exactly work the same way. However with practice I know I’ll be able to work it to make recognisable pictures. My kids will too since they really like the idea of drawing on the computer.
So here’s my first attempt (after I scribbled a few times). My second attempt involved more shading.
I think I’m going to like my new toy….er my new work equipment.
Have you ever used a Wacom tablet? What did you think?
Hey Diane; That tablet looks pretty neat. My goal is to illustrate my own books at some point as well. Where did you get this cool thing? Were there other options for creating illustrations? Thanks Mindy

I bought it at Staples (http://www.staples.ca/en/Wacom-CTH480M-Intuos-Small-Creative-Pen-and-Touch-Tablet/product_225159_2-CA_1_20001), Woodlawn, Dartmouth. They had only two last Friday. They sell out fast, especially when they go on sale. I tried to buy one last year between Nov 1 and the end of the year, but each time I went they were sold out.
You can check online to see if there are any in stock around the province. Then call. Make sure you get the right one. There is one on clearance that is pretty much the same thing, but this one is better for sketching.
There are other tablets in the series, bigger, more expensive. This one does all I want and is only $100.

Wow — that’s really neat! I have no such gadgets, not even an e-reader. I’m a little behind in creative technology…except Adobe Photoshop. I can work that alright. 😉

I’ve been dreaming of this gadget for more than three years. I almost had one last year, but it didn’t work out: every time I went to buy one, they were sold out. The only reason I bought this was to expand my ability to create images for my books. I admit, it is a fun tool.
I don’t have a lot of gadgets. I don’t own an e-reader either or a cell phone. Those things don’t inspire me.
Thanks, Libby. Adobe Photoshop is a wonderful program, but I don’t know if I’d have the patience to learn it.

That’s interesting Diane! Sheesh, I have enough trouble learning windows 8 on my new desktop! 🙂

If I’m interested I find it easier to learn. I guess we should apply this to teaching kids 🙂

Thanks, Laura. Sometimes I think I have too many hats. But I love drawing as much as I love writing.
